A female student gang-raped on a bus in India‘s capital Delhi has died at a Singapore hospital, doctors say.

A team of eight specialists had tried to keep the patient stable, but her condition continued to deteriorate over the two days she was at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, he added.

Officials from the High Commission of India had also been present when the patient passed away. The Indian home minister said the government had decided to send the victim overseas on the recommendation of her doctors.

Mentored in his early cricketing days by his elder brother Ajit, Sachin later honed his skills under celebrated coach Ramakant Achrekar.

Tendulkar's talent stood out since his school days, and partnered by his friend Vinod Kambli the duo made the cricketing circles sit up and take notice after an unbroken 664-run stand in a Lord Harris Shield international school game in 1988.

The 23-year-old paramedic student recorded her statement with a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) late on Friday, recalling sequence of events between 9.15 pm and 10.20 pm on December 16 when she was gangraped by six men in a moving chartered bus.

SDM Usha Chaturvedi visited the woman in the Safdarjung hospital ICU and spent two hours with her. During the period, the victim tried to “talk a bit” and “scribbled parts of her statement”.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chhaya Sharma said: “She has given a fearless and bold statement. It corroborates with what her friend has told us.”

The doctors said the woman was “calm and composed, and willing to give her statement to the investigators of the case”, therefore, they allowed the SDM to record her statement. Sources said during the process no one was allowed inside the ICU, other than SDM Chaturvedi.

It is learnt that the woman corroborated details provided by her friend, a 28-year-old engineer, who was also assaulted by the men. Sources said most questions were based on the engineer’s statement and needed to be answered with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

The victim reportedly told the magistrate that a scuffle started between her friend and the other men on the bus and she intervened. She said the attackers tried to throw her friend off the bus, but he put up a strong resistance.

Sources said the woman told the SDM that the men hit her friend on the head with a rod and he fell unconscious. One of the attackers (identified by police as Akshay Thakur) hit her and dragged her to the rear of the bus, she is learnt to have told the magistrate.

Singer Nithyasree Mahadevan has told the police that her husband Mahadevan, who had committed suicide by jumping off the Kotturpuram Bridge in the city a couple of days back, had taken the ‘extreme end’ as he couldn’t come to terms with his own life after the demise of his mother who passed away in April this year.

Even as Nithyasree was busy with the music season this month by taking part in various concerts, she had the shock of her life when her driver called up to inform her that her husband had jumped into the Adyar river from the Kotturpuram Bridge. The police and fire service personnel dished out the body of Mahadevan an hour after his fatal jump into the river.

The police are now conducting investigations to unearth the reason for his suicide. Nithyasree, during interrogations, told the police that “On that fateful day, he casually left the house in our car saying he wanted to change the car battery. Within 10 minutes, I got the call from driver Suresh who broke the terrible news to me. I couldn’t believe it and rushed to the spot when the fire service personnel were attempting to rescue him.

“I was hoping he’d survive but it didn’t happen. I can’t figure out the exact reason for his suicide. He was very much attached to his mother Shantha who passed away in April this year. I feel he had been greatly affected mentally by the loss of his mother and was under some sort of ‘depression’ for which he had been under treatment. This could be the only reason for his suicide as we were on excellent terms,” concluded the grieving singer.
