SABARIMALA, INDIA, December 31, 2013 (The Hindu): Thousands of devotees from across the country, mainly South Indian States, prayed at the Ayyappa temple here as it was opened for the Makaravilakku pilgrimage on Monday afternoon. The Pampa Manalpuram was crowded with a multitude of pilgrims congregating for the customary holy bath in the Pampa River before climbing the hills.

The head priest (Melasanthi), P.M. Narayanan Namboodiri, accompanied by the chief priest (Tantri), Kandararu Maheswararu, and other priests, opened the sanctum sanctorum at 5.30 p.m. The rituals will begin with the Tantri performing Ashtadravya Maha Ganapati Homom on Tuesday morning followed by Ashtabhishekom and Neyyabhishekom.

Islamic police in Indonesia’s sharia stronghold seized thousands of firecrackers and cardboard trumpets after the city administration banned New Year’s Eve celebrations for the first time, an official said on Tuesday.

The Monday night raid on street stalls and shops selling the items followed a fatwa, or decree, by the clerical Ulema Consultative Assembly that said New Year celebrations or wishing someone “Merry Christmas” was haram, or forbidden, in the city of Banda Aceh.

The Banda Aceh government backed the fatwa by banning New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city.

“This public-order operation ahead of New Year’s Eve is to ensure residents are compliant with calls from the government and ulema [Islamic scholars],” said a senior Banda Aceh sharia police official Reza Kamilin.

“There should be no activity whatsoever to celebrate the turn of the year,” Kamilin said.

The city ban is not technically legally binding but is being enforced by sharia police, whose role it is to “safeguard” morality.

Banda Aceh is the capital of Aceh province – the only part of Indonesia that enforces the strictest interpretation of Islamic law – where raids to enforce religious law are an everyday occurrence.

But this year is the first for any administration in the province to ban New Year’s Eve celebrations, in a sign of growing draconianism that rights groups oppose.

Sharia police will also conduct raids on hotels and cafes, which have been warned not to celebrate the day, Kamilin said.

“We will dissolve any mass gatherings. If anyone is seen with firecrackers or trumpets, we will confiscate them,” he said.

Other administrations in Aceh were reportedly also banning celebrations, saying Muslims should only celebrate the Islamic New Year.

Aceh began implementing sharia law after it was granted special autonomy in 2001. Authorities now regularly cane people caught gambling or drinking alcohol.

Indonesia is the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation, but most practise a moderate form of Islam, and New Year’s Eve festivities are planned all over the country.

In a rare medical condition, a three-month old baby boy from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu keeps catching fire spontaneously. The bizarre incident has stunned local doctors, and spooked the villagers who blame paranormal forces for the phenomenon, local media report said.

Rahul, second son of farmhands Karnan and Rajeshwari from Villupuram village, seemed as healthy and normal as any other baby at birth. But since then, the baby reportedly burst into flames at least four times, beginning when he was just nine days old.

In the latest incident, the baby suffered extensive burns and is being treated at Kilpauk Medical College hospital in Chennai, the state’s capital. According to Rahul's parents, each time the child caught fire spontaneously and there was no source of fire in the vicinity.

The driver of the train that crashed in Spain is in police custody and will appear before a judge today.

The crash killed 78 people Wednesday Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Francisco Jose Garzon was released from a hospital yesterday and detained by police on suspicion of reckless homicide.

He will be questioned by a judge today.

That judge will decide whether to press formal charges.

Investigators believe the train was going more than twice the suggested speed, when it derailed on a curve and crashed.

The judge has until tonight to decide whether to press formal charges against Garzon.

So far, he has refused to make a statement or answer any questions
