Life gave her a second chance and she grabbed it like an opportunity of a lifetime. Anannya Sarmah's Miss India journey is nothing less than a miracle story. Eliminated early in the competition, Anannya thought to put an end to her Miss India dream; but God had other plans for her and just when she was about to return to a life of an ordinary girl, she was called back into her dream world.

Now, a proud Miss India 2013 finalist, Anannya settles down for a candid chat with us where she shares interesting anecdotes about her Miss India ride, preparations for the big day and much more!

Excerpts...

You are one of the finalists who will battle it out with other contestants for the coveted Miss India title this month end. Right from the audition rounds to being adjudged as one of the finalists, how has the transition been?

I'm probably the living example of a transition if there was one. Having been eliminated during the auditions and then called back, I was a very unsure girl at the beginning. To say that the past fortnight has seen a sea change in my confidence would be an understatement. The mentoring and training sessions have been tremendously helpful and every contestant is going through an experience so similar yet so different in so many ways. I wish them all the luck.

Tell us a bit about your journey as a model to becoming a beauty queen. What was the inspiration behind seeing yourself as a Miss India?

Modeling happened when I was studying in Kolkata; a photographer noticed me on the streets and asked me if I was interested in a catalogue shoot. It just seemed to take off from there and has been a wonderful ride till now. I feel like I've met the right people, who have mentored me into finding and focusing on my strengths, helping me tremendously in building my confidence and going forward in the process.

My inspiration is grounded on my belief that god can only give you the opportunity to help yourself and others around you. It's you who has to recognise the opportunity and decide what you want to do with it. Winning the title is an opportunity, what you do after, is what the world shall remember you for.

Please elaborate on the kind of training you are going through for the big day. How was the session with RJ Neha that all Miss India contestants were part of recently?

The training sessions started with Alicia Raut who gave us tips and bits on how to be a diva on the ramp and to basically 'kill it'...well...walking just got more difficult. I realised I was the only contestant who had not been trained by a mentor in a city pageant. Alicia has a good eye and every single step is noted and corrected under her supervision. Her lingo on the ramp is hold-your-stomach hilarious and she has a smile so infectious, you'd remember it for the rest of your life. The tricky sessions started with Marc Robinson. He calls your name out and there you are standing with a mike trying to dodge his questions with giggles and smiles. Sabira Merchant is my personal favourite. She walks in and commands attention like no other. She is brilliant at what she does and it shows.

The Radio Mirchi session was probably the most entertaining of them all. We laughed and cheered, chatted the whole session away and generally had a ball of a time. RJ Neha kept us on our toes the whole time and asked us to enact what we were likely to say to a guy pestering for time or a reply. The girls were very sporty in their replies and full of spunk! It was a refreshing change from all the other sessions we've had for sure!

About your fitness routine and health regime
Swimming, to me is the biggest stress buster and is fantastic if you want a toned and fit body. For that matter, playing any kind of sport helps you unwind like no other fitness regime. The competitive environment can sometimes get to you and I've realised that it's very important to completely disengage yourself from everything and everyone for a few minutes to just relax after a hectic day. Luckily, I am blessed with good metabolism and even better genes so I eat my everyday food without having to worry about weight issues.

What does it mean to be a Miss India and where do you see yourself after winning the prestigious title?
Winning the most coveted beauty pageant title of this nation is a big achievement, not just for me but for all those who share the same dream. My focus has always been, is and will forever be to stay true to who I am and what I stand for. Many have dreams of Bollywood and the likes. If my future lies in the same direction, I look forward to it but my passion for animals and a purposeful aim to actively participate in the conservation of wildlife in India will remain and shall hopefully materialize in the future.

What will be your winning strategy? What sets you apart from the other girls?
The best strategy: Don't strategize. I'd rather see the leaders of this country work on their strategies. They seem to be getting paid for it. I think it's important to enjoy the experience and remember the little moments that make up the big picture than have the big picture and forget the little moments that got you there. Yes, I would love to win the title of Miss India but I also know that I don't have to resort to strategies to win it. What sets me apart? The name Anannya means "like no other". My personality and character hold true to my name.

Any subtitle contest(s)/title(s) in the pageant that you are confident of winning?
Probably, 'Best Smile'. No one can smile as much as I do. Not sure about 'Miss Talented' though. There are a lot of hidden talents out there!

Your favourite ex Miss India who also been your inspiration
Lara Dutta. She is the epitome of intelligence and grace. Qualities I aspire to emulate and a personality quintessential to becoming a Miss India.
