The winners of the Miss Diva 2013 were declared at a star-studded event at Westin Mumbai Garden City, Mumbai on Thursday evening.

In a major setback to the progressive movement in Maharashtra, leading anti-superstition activist Narendra Dabholkar was shot dead by two unidentified assailants. The incident took place while he was out on a morning walk on Tuesday.

Known for his over two-decade long campaign against outdated and inhuman social practices, Dabholkar was currently engaged in mobilising public opinion and holding discussions with Maharashtra Government for passing an ‘anti-superstition and black magic’ law in the State legislature, opposed by certain sections of the society, including the Warkari sect.

The 69-year-old Dabholkar, who headed the ‘Andhashraddha Nirluman Samiti’ (anti-superstition movement), was out for a morning walk when two motorcycle-borne unidentified assailants fired two bullets from close range into his head from behind, police said quoting an eyewitness.

The offence took place on the bridge near Omkareshwar Temple in the city in the vicinity of ‘Sadhana’ magazine, which Dabholkar edited to propagate progressive thought to change social mindset.

Police said Dabholkar, who lay in a pool of blood on the bridge, was identified by a photo in his wallet and a cheque in the name of the Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (ANS). He was taken to Sassoon Hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Four bullets were fired at the activist out of whom two were lodged in his head, police added.

For Dabholkar, who hailed from Satara, spreading scientific temper and eradicating superstitions and undesirable rituals in the society was a lifelong mission which he carried with zest and rational thought, notwithstanding resistance from retrograde elements.

Music director and TV anchor James Vasanthan was arrested yesterday for abusing his neighbour Radha Venuprasad who 64 years old around 7 o’clock evening.

James vasanth who living in VGP Golden seaview in Palavakkam. Actress Kanaka who played the female lead opposite Rajendra Prasad in the film 'Valu Jada Tolu Beltu' is living out her final days in a Hospital after the attempts of doctors to help her in fighting the battle against cancer failed.

Apparently, Kanaka was diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer in January this year and ever since then she was undergoing treatment at Karunyam Pain & Palliative Care Centre in Kerala. Just recently, Doctors have informed her that the treatment has failed and she is in her final days of life. The actress has decided to spend her last few days in the hospital itself and asked the hospital authorities to deny permission to visitors.

Kanaka is the daughter of yesteryear actress Devika. She acted in over 40 films in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam languages. She made her debut in 1989 and her last film released in the year 2004. She shared screen space with superstars like Rajinikanth, Mammootty and Mohanlal.

She’s been busy around the clock promoting her new film.

Leading south Indian actress Manjula Vijayakumar, who acted in more than a hundred films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada languages, died on Tuesday morning.

She was 59 years old and is survived by her husband and actor Vijayakumar and three daughters, Vanitha, Preetha and Sridevi.

Doctors at Sri Ramachandra Medical College (SRMC) hospital, where she was admitted last Wednesday after a fall, said the actress died following renal failure.

“Her whole family was with her when she died,” said actor Arun Vijay, her stepson from Vijayakumar’s first marriage.

“She lost consciousness this morning,” he added.

According to media reports, her last rites will be performed in the evening.

Manjula, once a popular face in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada cinema, had starred in over 100 films in her three-decade long career.

She made her cinematic debut in Tamil romantic-drama “Shanti Nilayam” (1969), in which she played the teenage daughter to Gemini Ganeshan.

Some of her best films include “Rickshawkaran”, “Ulagam Sutrum Valiban” and “Alluri Seetarama Raju”.

She continued to bag lead roles till the late 70s and then appeared in supporting roles.

Though veteran film-maker Bharathiraja didn’t speak highly of his disciple, the late actor-director Manivannan never missed out treating and talking high of his guru.

“My identity today as a filmmaker is only because of my mentor Bharathiraja Sir, whom I always admire; my life wouldn’t have been the same but for his guidance. He gave me the opportunity to write the dialogues in Nizhalgal and though the film wasn’t a success, he went against his friends’ terse remarks and gave me another offer to write the script of Alaigal Oivathillai which was a super-duper hit.
 
“I got awards from the Tamil Nadu Government from the hands of the legendary MGR, the then chief minister, for best script-writer and dialogue-writer. I have always treated Bharathiraja as my ‘second father’ irrespective of the political differences we have had. Whenever I think of him, invariably, my heart goes soft and I’m sure that the feeling of gratitude is what has made me what I am today.

“Times are moving fast….he married me off and now I have got my daughter married and making arrangements for my son’s marriage. Irrespective of whatever I achieve, I always take pride in the fact that I’m Bharathiraja’s aide (his voice breaks)….,” were Manivannan’s final comments about his mentor who later ironically criticized him in the harshest manner possible in a regional weekly.

Manivannan, Tamil actor-director passed away at the age of 59 at his residence in Chennai on Saturday following a cardiac arrest, family sources said.  He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Manivannan started his career as an assistant with well known director Bharathi Raja and in 1982 directed his first movie ‘Gopurangal Saivathillai’.

He also acted as a villain in ‘Kodi Parakkuthu’ directed by Bharathi Raja, which had superstar Rajnikant playing hero.

His 50th and last directorial venture was ‘Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA’, released in May this year.

The audio launch of the movie was his last public appearance.

The character artiste also essayed the role of a comedian in several movies, including ‘Ullathai Allithaa’.

The film fraternity expressed shocked at his demise and many flocked to his residence to pay their last respects.

Famous Tamil actor and director Manivannan, 59, breathed his last on Saturday in Chennai after suffering from cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife, son Raghu and daughter Jyothi. Manivannan passed away at his residence in Nesapakkam.

Manivannan hailed from a small town in Coimbatore. He had acted in more than 400 films. In his acting career, he has done many different roles including comedy roles, supporting characters or villain roles. He has excelled in all the regions he had attempted into.

In late 1970s, he started his film career in Tamil film industry by writing stories and dialogues for some of the films of his mentor Bharathiraja including “Alaigal Oayvathillai”, “Tick Tick Tick” and “Nizhalgal”.

He had also assisted Bharatiraja in some of his films in various languages including Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. He had directed nearly 50 films and some of the known films are “Gopurangal Saivadhillai”, “Nooravathu Naal” and “Amaidhi Padai.” Other noted films directed by Manivannan include “Pudhu Manithan”, “Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi” and “Jalli Kattu”.

His last film as a director was the Sathyaraj starrer “Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA” which was released in May. The film is a sequel to the superhit “Amaithi Padai.”

In the field of acting, Manivannan had been acting character roles and had won the hearts of millions of people. He usually plays hero’s uncle or father in most of the films, Manivannan will be remembered for his roles in Tamil films such as “Mudhalvan”, “Sangamam” and “Ullathai Allitha”.

Several members from the film fraternity have offered condolences to the actior’s family.

Actor Siddharth tweeted: “The great Manivannan sir is no more. Many lives in cinema are what they are today because of him. Writer, director, actor…gone too soon. RIP”.

Police said they will seek expert help to verify Jiah’s handwriting in the letter, a notarised copy of which has been handed over to investigators.

It is not known when Jiah Khan had penned the note and how it was discovered by her family six days after her death.

Last Monday around midnight, Jiah was found hanging in her home in Sagar Sangeet building in the posh Juhu area of north-west Mumbai where she lived with her family.

The six-page note details Jiah’s strained relationship with Sooraj, alleging that he had cheated her though she trusted him.

“By the time you will be reading this letter, probably by then I won’t be there in this world,” the note is reported to have said, indicating that she had planned to end her life.

Bollywood celebrity Jiah Khan, also known as Nafisa Khan, has passed away. While a few in the market say that she dedicated destruction, the cause of her loss of life is currently not mention.

Jiah Khan committed suicide at her  flat in Sagar Tarang apartment in Juhu in Mumbai on Monday night. The reason of the suicide is still unknown.

Her mother informed police about the suicide around 11.45pm.

Police sources said that the incident happened at about 11pm and no suicide note was found. The body has been sent to Cooper Hospital for postmortem.

She had been depressed for some time due to personal issues, but was keen on returning to acting soon. She was also meeting filmmakers regarding projects,” sources close to the actress said.

Jiah was found dead in her Juhu residence in Mumbai on Monday. Her mother and sister were not present at the flat. Postmortem report said the young actress died due to hanging.She was upset over several things and that could be seen in the last Tweet where she said, "...sometimes u need a sabbatical to recollect ur thoughts" Her last rites were performed on Wednesday.

She was buried in the Santa Cruz graveyard in Mumbai.
